Remember KISS
Have you ever listened to a lecture or read an article and thought yourself ‘I have no idea what I just heard/read?’ When it comes to communicating, we must always practice KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid). Before you give your next presentation or send out that next direct mail piece, see if your content passes the KISS test:
- Is there jargon? It’s fine among co-workers, but steer clear of using jargon outside the office. It’s the quickest way to lose interest with your audience.
- Is it brief? Long gone are the days of 10-page papers. Keep it short, sweet and to the point.
- Can anyone understand it? I think Albert Einstein said it best – “If you can’t explain it to a six year old, then you don’t understand it yourself.”
- Why should they care? Ok, this actually falls under the What’s-In-It-For-Me (WIIFM) practice, but is still a critical component to creating a successful communication piece.
